Whether you're a visitor or a resident, a Florida Keys marathon is one of the more popular things to participate in or watch.

Blessed with sunshine, warm weather, and incredible scenery, the Florida Keys is the perfect place to get out and run, walk, or simply get from A to B, any way you can.

There are many different local Florida races and events that are held throughout the Keys.

In fact, Key West FL is somewhat of a hot bed when it comes to Florida Keys race events held throughout the year.

They are sponsored by different local groups and clubs, often with the purpose of raising funds for worthwhile causes and charities.

Below is a list of some of the more popular Florida Keys races that have become anticipated annual Florida Keys events and attractions.

Top Florida Keys Races and Marathons

Since the area is conducive for outdoor activities, it's obvious there would be numerous Florida Keys races scheduled throughout the year. Arranged by date, here's just some of the more popular events you may want to enter, volunteer for, or simply enjoy as a spectator.

Florida Keys Ragnar Relay

Unfortunately late in 2015, Monroe County, for various reasons declined to issue Ragnar's permit for the 2016 Ragnar Relay race.

There is hope that with modifications by Ragnar, that the race will be held in the Florida Keys sometime in the future. However to do so, it will be necessary to host the Ragnar Relay at a time of year when tourism in the Florida Keys is not at it's peak.

In the world of races, the Ragnar Relay was a newer, crazy, and very popular Florida Keys marathon. The original Florida Keys Ragnar Relay started in Miami on a Friday and continued non-stop until the entrants reach Key West FL 199 miles later sometime on Saturday.

This event is not an actual race to the finish line, it's based upon best time, and it's a group event, with each participant running different legs of the relay.

The 2016 Ragnar Relay Florida Keys event was scheduled for February 5 - 6, 2016 before it's cancellation by the County and Ragnar.

Sombrero Beach Run Marathon Florida

Sombrero Beach Run is another Florida Keys race that provides a lot of excitement and it's usually held the first Saturday of March. The 2018 Sombrero Beach Run is scheduled for Saturday, March 3, conditions permitting.

Sombrero Beach Run is broken down into different events so it has something for everyone. You can participate in the 15K Challenge, the 10K Run, or the 5K Walk/Run.

The charitable event begins Friday night with preregistration taking place at Sombrero Beach.

The next day, Florida race entrants are treated to a variety of vendors plying various food items, drinks, and souvenirs, all topped off with good music.

Prizes are awarded, and afterward, race entrants and guests are invited to stay and enjoy the wonderful amenities beautiful Sombrero beach has to offer. For additional information on how to register for Sombrero Beach Run and what the different divisions are, call 305-289-9868.

Seven Mile Bridge Run

Established in 1982, the Seven Mile Bridge Run is perhaps the longest standing, and most famous of the Florida Keys races.

A testament to the fine Florida weather is that a major snag didn't develop until the race's 31st season. The morning of Saturday, April 21, 2012, the people in the Florida Keys were treated to strong thunderstorms and heavy rain, forcing officials to cancel the much anticipated 7 MB Run race.

The 2018 Seven Mile Bridge Run date is Saturday, April 14 providing mother nature concurs.

Florida Keys Marathon - The Keys100

If you're an avid runner, an exciting Florida Keys marathon you'll want to check out is the Keys100. Proceeds from this event go to help with prostate cancer research, and to support the Cancer Foundation of the Florida Keys.

This is also a Florida Keys marathon with a twist. It can be run individually or as a team of 6, with each individual of the team taking a different leg of the relay.

This Florida race is also broken down into two distance increments. The 100K race starts in Key Largo, the 50K race starts in Marathon Florida, and everyone ends up at Smathers Beach in Key West.

The 2018 Keys100 Marathon race is scheduled for May 19 and 20.

Key Largo Bridge Run

Another fun Florida Keys bridge race is the Key Largo Bridge Run. This takes place on the Jewfish Creek Bridge which leads you into Key Largo.

The 2016 Key Largo Bridge Run was Saturday, November 12th but the 2017 race has been postponed - hopefully only temporarily. They are hoping to know spring of 2018 if they'll be able to have a race that November.

Normally, this Florida Keys race commences at 6:45 a.m. at Key Largo Baptist Church, 835 Largo Road.

Early packet pickups occur the Thursday before from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the big tiki hut at Bayside Grille, 99530 Overseas Highway, in Key Largo, FL.

That Friday is the official registration date with registration, bib and packet pickup scheduled between 12:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. at the Bayside Grille’s tiki hut.

Last minute registration can also be available on Saturday, the race day. Entrant fees will be higher; however, this latest race feature benefits those who were unable to register in advance.

Starting at 5:15 a.m. Saturday morning, entrants can take advantage of transportation to this Florida Keys marathon from three designated locations. One location is the Key Largo School, 104801 Overseas Highway. A second location is Waldorf Plaza, 99607 Overseas Highway. The third location is only for guests residing at the Hampton Inn, 102400 Overseas Highway.

Once participants reach the church, there are a variety of vendors to frequent. At 6:45 a.m., the Key Largo race entrants walk to the start line on Overseas Highway / US Highway 1. Once there, a brief ceremony is held before the Key Largo Bridge Run begins at 7:00 a.m.

Awards are distributed as each race category / segment has concluded. Entrants can enjoy massages, a pancake breakfast, and explore the various vendors on the grounds.

Buses are also available for return trips beginning at approximately 7:15 a.m. to the three designated locations.

Entrants of the Key Largo Bridge Run have a choice of different races, with various entrance fees starting as low as $30.00 . The Florida Keys Bridge Run starts with the Half Marathon, followed by the 10K and 5K walk/run.

Proceeds from this Florida Keys marathon benefit several charities in the area.

A Florida Keys marathon is a lot of wholesome, good fun. It's a chance to be with others who enjoy the sport as much as you do. It's also an opportunity to help worthwhile local charities.

Of course, one of the biggest perks is that you're able to enjoy these fun Florida activities in one of the most beautiful places on earth - the Florida Keys.
